one laptop per child

this is incredible. beautifully designed, and an amazing way to connect and educate children who might otherwise not be able to. yves behar was the head designer, and when asked why was high design (a luxury in western society) so important for this 'cheap' laptop? he spoke about how the sense of ownership and pride is just as important in the success of the laptop.

"OLPC is new experiment in socially responsible design, in which a nonprofit organization harnesses cutting-edge personal technologies and distributes them on an unprecedented scale." (quoted from)

my place!

i thought i would add some photos of my new place! I'll put some more on later when i get there of the actual apartment (i think this one is actually on the second floor) it will be fun to live up on the fourth floor and try to get everything up there. good thing my mom and i have pipes (and good thing ikea delivers!)

design for the other 90%

i found this great book on my twee trip to san francisco. in my favorite store (anthropologie) of all places. it has gotten me really excited again about school and what i can make of it. its actually a book from an exhibit in nyc last september.

one of the cool projects is from a company called D-Lab, and its all about clean burning charcoal.

...and the adventure begins!

this is my blog. I've never really been one to blog. i started doing it with twee, and love it. this one will be a bit different. it's going to be a mix of photos, links, and talking. i'm excited to share what i'm up to while i'm gone!! and i think it will be cool for people to check out things i come across in my research, learn about the people i hear speaking at school, and all around just see pictures of me in holland!

i'll most likely add albums to facebook, so there will be links probably. its easier. i can't figure out how to add albums on here...if anyone knows i would be grateful! i hope you guys enjoy reading about my adventures, and keep checking back and comment lots! i miss you!
